Auckland Grammar – international champions!

Auckland Grammar had a strong second day in Melbourne (full results) and ended up the Aussie National Interschool Champions! Top player, Daniel Shen, finished with 6.5; conceding only one draw, to Brighton Grammar’s Jason Tang.

Somerville Intermediate challenged tournament favourites Brighton Grammar (full results) and finished runner-up by just one point.

The Primary Champions, Milford Primary (full results) were surprised by the strength and depth of the Australian Primary players and ended up in 8th place.

New Zealanders in the Aussie schools championships

The three best school teams in New Zealand are in Melbourne competing today in the Aussie National Interschool Championships.

Milford Primary is in 10th place with 10 points (leading score 16 points).

Somerville Intermediate is in 4th place with 9.5 points (leading score 14 points).

Auckland Grammar is in 3rd place with 11.5 points (leading score 13 points).

Undoubtedly the Auckland Grammar team of Daniel Shen and Michael Wu were the best transfer players in the event; winning the transfer chess tournament last night with a perfect 8/8.

After a good rest last night the three games today will determine the winners. Good luck Kiwis!

Interschool champions win $1750

Milford Primary School (National Primary Champions) today took out the Chess Kids Primary Interschool event held at Pigeon Mountain Primary. Their win gave them a nice set of gold medals and an invitation and entry fee (worth $1750) to the Aussie National Interschool Chess Championships in two weeks time. Read more…
